Patients often need nearly six months to fully recover from carpal tunnel release surgery. Higher preoperative pain and hand function scores were linked to longer recovery times after carpal tunnel surgery.

Background:

  • Carpal tunnel release (CTR) is a common hand surgery.
  • Limited data exists on patient-reported full recovery timelines post-CTR.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the average time until patients report full recovery after carpal tunnel release.
  • To identify factors associated with delayed full recovery.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective enrollment of 86 patients undergoing CTR.
  • Data collection included validated questionnaires (Likert pain, QuickDASH, BCTQ) pre-surgery and post-recovery.
  • Bivariate analyses identified predictors of full recovery.

Main Results:

  • Mean time to self-reported full recovery was 5.5 months.
  • 11.8% of patients did not achieve full recovery by 1 year.
  • Improved pain and function scores exceeded minimal clinically important differences.

Conclusions:

  • Full recovery after CTR takes a substantial average of nearly 6 months.
  • Recovery time exceeds the time to achieve minimal clinical improvement.
  • Findings can inform preoperative patient expectations for carpal tunnel surgery recovery.
