Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.2K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the...

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

548
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
Pulmonary Function Tests are crucial diagnostic tools for assessing respiratory function, particularly in patients with chronic respiratory disorders. They comprehensively evaluate lung volumes, ventilatory function, breathing mechanics, diffusion, and gas exchange. These tests help diagnose pulmonary diseases and play a significant role in monitoring disease progression, evaluating disability, and assessing response to therapy.
PFTs involve using a spirometer, a...

Physical Assessment of the Respiratory Tract II: Palpation

2.4K
Physical assessment of the respiratory tract is critical in identifying potential health issues. One key component of this assessment is palpation, a technique healthcare providers use to assess the body for abnormalities. This content explores the method of palpation in evaluating the respiratory tract, focusing on thoracic palpation and tactile fremitus.
Thoracic Palpation
Thoracic palpation detects tenderness, masses, lesions, respiratory excursions, and vocal fremitus. The nurse assesses...

Area of Science:

  • Physical Therapy Education
  • Professional Licensure Examinations

Background:

  • The National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) is essential for physical therapy practice in the US.
  • The Practice Exam and Assessment Tool (PEAT) is a widely used resource strongly correlated with NPTE success.
  • No studies have evaluated the effectiveness of NPTE practice exams and coaching programs amidst evolving exam formats.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine physical therapy students' perceptions of the 2024 NPTE.
  • To assess student views on practice exams and coaching programs.
  • To understand student preferences for NPTE preparation resources.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 540 students after taking the 2024 NPTE.
  • The survey gathered data on perceived NPTE content, difficulty, and predictive accuracy.
  • Student preferences for commercial practice exams and coaching programs were recorded.

Main Results:

  • 61.1% of students were uncertain about passing the NPTE; 49.4% found it somewhat accurate for clinical readiness.
  • Musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary systems were perceived as most difficult.
  • PEAT was the preferred practice exam (61.3%), followed by NPTE Final Frontier (57.9%); 82.4% utilized coaching programs and rated them highly.

Conclusions:

  • Students preferred PEAT and found coaching programs beneficial for NPTE preparation.
  • Positive NPTE perceptions contrast with student uncertainty about passing and perceived content challenges.
  • Findings provide foundational data for refining NPTE preparatory tools and aligning them with educational and clinical demands.
