Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a modeled cost analysis comparing IGSRT and MMS for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
  • The analysis utilized CPT/Medicare rates to evaluate treatment expenses.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated three representative SCC lesions staged as T1, T2, and Tis.
  • Lesions were categorized by anatomical location: head and neck versus trunk and extremities.

Main Results:

  • Mohs surgery (MMS) costs ranged from $1,010.15 to $1,566.68.
  • IGSRT costs varied widely, from $1,450.49 to $10,244.93 for 10 sessions and $2,058.74 to $25,510.58 for 25 sessions.
  • Superficial radiotherapy (SRT) delivery constituted only 3.74% of the per-session cost.

Conclusions:

  • SRT can be theoretically 1.11 to 22.99 times more expensive than MMS, irrespective of MMS repair complexity.
  • While procedure times are comparable or slightly longer, SRT is spread over 10 to 25 days.
