Background:
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common pelvic floor condition causing unintentional urine leakage during activities that raise abdominal pressure. The aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) is a novel inflammatory indicator where higher values indicate greater systemic inflammation. However, to date, the relationship between AISI and SUI lacks comprehensive evaluation. To fill this research gap, this study analyzed the link between the AISI and SUI in U.S. adults.
Methods:
Using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2007 to 2016, we analyzed data from 10,934 participants. SUI status was ascertained by questionnaire, and AISI was calculated from blood count records. The association between AISI and SUI was examined using weighted multivariate logistic regression models.
Results:
Participants with higher AISI level had a greater frequency of SUI. Participants in the highest AISI quartile showed significantly increased odds of SUI compared to those in the lowest quartile [Q4 vs. Q1: fully adjusted odds ratio (OR) =1.34; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.074-1.677; P=0.01]. No statistically significant interactions were observed between AISI and other covariates in subgroup analyses (all P for interaction >0.05).
Conclusions:
Our analysis of U.S. adults suggests that elevated AISI is independently associated with SUI and highlights its value as a composite inflammatory marker for further research.
