A novel genetic counseling student rotation in leadership and management

As genetic counselors increasingly enter roles that do not have direct patient contact, formal training in leadership and management (L&M) can create an avenue to the application of genetic counseling skills within and outside of direct patient care roles. This novel L&M rotation piloted an opportunity for students to receive education and experience in L&M within the time constraints of a genetic counseling training program. A primary supervisor (a GC in an L&M role at a Boston hospital) coordinated the rotation and identified site leads-GCs in L&M positions at other Boston hospitals and institutions-who served as responsible contacts for students. The students observed between two to four meetings per week for 7 weeks and completed 25 interviews with genetic counselors and others in L&M roles. Students debriefed regularly with the primary supervisor, who also gathered site lead feedback. The rotation concluded with a final presentation by the students of common topics discussed in GC interviews. A L&M rotation is a feasible option to diversify the experiences of genetic counseling students, to better prepare them for roles both within and outside of direct patient care, and to offer a unique rotation opportunity for interested programs. The experience was enjoyable and informative for the students and placed minimal burden on the genetic counseling program, primary supervisor, and participating site leads. L&M rotations could develop L&M skills to support evolving challenges faced by the profession.
