Purpose:
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a proactive method for identifying potential system failures before they occur. As effective admission communication is critical but complex in pediatric care, this study uses FMEA to analyze the process, identify its vulnerabilities, and develop improvement strategies.
Design And Methods:
This study was conducted at a central Chinese regional pediatric center. A multidisciplinary team mapped the pediatric admission communication process using a flow diagram, identified potential failure modes, and calculated their risk priority numbers (RPNs) to inform targeted corrective measures.
Results:
The pediatric inpatient admission communication process was categorized into six steps and 28 subprocesses, revealing nine failure modes. A noisy environment posed the highest risk, followed by excessive nursing workload. Key corrective measures were formulated to address these, including establishing dedicated communication rooms, enhancing ward facilities, and optimizing nursing staff allocation.
Conclusion:
This study successfully demonstrated the application of FMEA to identify and systematically prioritize potential failures in the pediatric inpatient admission communication process. The findings confirm FMEA as a valuable proactive tool for enhancing healthcare quality and patient safety by enabling the development of targeted improvement strategies.
Practice Implications:
A positive communication environment is key to effective communication with pediatric inpatients during admission. Nursing management practitioners can effectively adopt the FMEA tool to proactively reduce medical risks and improve patient care quality.
