A cross-sectional study on venous thromboembolism awareness in the Saudi Arabian community

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), presents a significant healthcare system issue globally, including in Saudi Arabia, where rising sedentary lifestyles and obesity rates increase the risk. Despite its serious health implications, public awareness of VTE remains limited. This cross-sectional study aims to assess VTE awareness among adults in Saudi Arabia, identify knowledge gaps, and explore how demographic factors influence awareness.

A cross-sectional study design was employed, with a structured questionnaire distributed online to 773 adults across Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire assessed participants' knowledge of VTE, its risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures. Demographic data, including age, gender, education, and region, were analyzed to identify awareness variations. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, with chi-square tests used to determine significant associations.

The study found that awareness levels varied significantly across demographic groups. Higher awareness was observed among individuals in the Central region, females, and those aged 36-50. Education level positively correlated with awareness, while gaps were identified in recognizing VTE risk factors and symptoms. Smoking was the most commonly recognized risk factor, yet knowledge about VTE symptoms remained low. Healthcare professionals were the preferred source of VTE information.

The study highlights the need for targeted public health campaigns to improve VTE awareness, particularly among younger, older, and rural populations. By addressing knowledge gaps and leveraging healthcare professionals as key educators, these efforts can lead to better prevention, early detection, and management of VTE, ultimately reducing its burden on public health.
