  • 74.24% of children used spoken words, gestures, or both; 9.09% used speech-generating devices (SGDs).

  • Over half of children's words overlapped with the MCDI, but only 32% overlapped with core word lists, indicating a preference for "fringe" words.

Conclusions:

  • Young children with autism and limited language may use vocabulary related to personal interests.
  • Current core word lists may not fully represent the expressive vocabulary of this population.
  • Findings have implications for customizing AAC vocabulary and setting intervention goals for children with autism.
