Abstract:
Adoption of physical activity as a lifestyle modification is often challenging. With advancements in technology, smartwatches and fitness applications are increasingly being used as tools to promote healthier behaviors, though their impact in the Indian population is not well studied. To assess the usage patterns of smartwatches and fitness tracking applications and evaluate their influence on physical activity behavior among users. An observational study was conducted among 343 smartwatch users, recruited through online platforms using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data on demographics, device use, and physical activity behaviors were collected and analyzed with SPSS version 20. Of the respondents, 69.4% were current smartwatch users, predominantly males (64.5%) aged 31-40 years. Fitness tracking was the most common use (83.5%), with 72% reporting daily usage. A significant improvement in exercise frequency was observed after smartwatch use (P < 0.0001). About 74% of users reported positive behavior change, mainly due to goal setting, inactivity reminders, and step count features. Overweight and obese participants showed greater improvement compared to those with normal BMI (P = 0.04). Some users reported stress when unable to meet targets. Smartwatches effectively promote physical activity behavior and can support health promotion and chronic disease prevention. Long-term sustainability of such technology-driven changes requires further study.
