Summary

Background:

Stroke impacts many working-age individuals in the UK, with a significant portion unable to return to work.
Occupational therapists play a role in supporting stroke survivors' return to work, but their specific practices are not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore occupational therapists' perceptions of working with stroke survivors aiming to return to work.
To investigate current occupational therapy practices and confidence levels in supporting vocational rehabilitation for stroke survivors.

Main Methods:

A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a survey and focus groups.
The study included occupational therapists in the UK working with stroke survivors for at least six months.

Main Results:

Survey results indicated a preference for traditional rehabilitation over work-specific interventions.
Focus group participants reported lower confidence in employer liaison and identified systemic challenges like resource limitations and service inflexibility.

Conclusions:

Current occupational therapy practices may not adequately address the vocational rehabilitation needs of stroke survivors.
Recommendations include increased flexibility in service delivery, specialized post-graduate training, and dedicated specialist roles in stroke vocational rehabilitation.
