[Periprosthetic fractures after elbow arthroplasty]

Total elbow arthroplasty procedures have increased significantly in recent years as a result of demographic change and the expansion of surgical indications. This trend is accompanied by a rising prevalence of specific complications, among which periprosthetic fractures-with an incidence ranging from approximately 5% to 29%-play a central role. These injuries represent a considerable surgical challenge due to the complex anatomy of the elbow and frequently limited bone quality. The present article provides a comprehensive overview of the etiology, diagnostics, classification, and current treatment strategies of periprosthetic elbow fractures. While simple fracture types can often be addressed conservatively, complex shaft fractures involving prosthesis instability typically require elaborate revision procedures involving the use of long-stem prostheses and bone grafts. The primary objective of treatment is restoration of painless function while simultaneously minimizing high postoperative complication rates.
