Long-term comorbidity patterns in juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Adults with long-standing juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) frequently develop comorbidities, especially hypertension. Biologic therapy may reduce comorbidity risk, highlighting the need for long-term JIA patient monitoring.

- Hypertension (9%), psychiatric disease (8%), and osteoporosis (5%) were the most prevalent comorbidities.
- Autoimmune diseases (7.1/1000 PY), hypertension (5.1/1000 PY), and psychiatric disease (4.0/1000 PY) showed the highest incidence.
- Biologic DMARD use was linked to a lower risk of psychiatric disease (OR=0.38, p=0.03).
Conclusions:
- Adults with long-standing JIA have a high burden of comorbidities, with hypertension being particularly common.
- Biologic therapy may offer a protective effect against developing certain comorbidities in JIA patients.
- Continuous monitoring for comorbidities is essential for the long-term management of JIA.
