IR Spectrometers

3.3K
There are two main infrared (IR) spectrophotometers: dispersive IR spectrometers and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. In a dispersive IR spectrometer, a beam of infrared radiation produced by a hot wire is divided into two parallel equal-intensity beams using mirrors. One beam passes through the sample, while another is a reference beam. The beams then move through the monochromator, which separates the radiations into a continuous spectrum of different frequencies. The...

    Summary

A new reflective focused laser differential interferometer (R-FLDI) offers greater versatility for measurements. This innovative design maintains performance while enabling broader applications with fewer optical access points.

    Area of Science:

    • Optical metrology
    • Fluid dynamics instrumentation

    Background:

    • Focused laser differential interferometers (FLDI) are valuable tools for precise measurements.
    • Traditional FLDI setups can be limited by optical access requirements.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce and evaluate a novel reflective FLDI (R-FLDI) instrument.
    • To demonstrate the enhanced versatility of R-FLDI compared to traditional FLDI.

    Main Methods:

    • Designed and constructed benchtop configurations of both traditional FLDI and R-FLDI.
    • Used instruments to probe the exit of a translated sonic jet along the beam axis.

    Main Results:

    • The R-FLDI instrument demonstrated comparable performance to traditional FLDI.
