Smart infusion pumps are crucial for reducing medication errors.
Integration with electronic medical records (EMR) enables closed-loop medication management.
Evaluating EMR-smart pump interoperability's impact on patient safety and user experience is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the effect of EMR-smart pump interoperability on patient safety indicators.
To evaluate user acceptability and workflow efficiency among nursing staff.
To compare outcomes before and after the implementation of integrated systems.

Main Methods:

A comparative study design was used across two Australian health service sites.
Baseline data (pre-integration) and post-implementation data were collected.
Key metrics included medication library compliance, alert frequency, programming efficiency (keystrokes), and user surveys.

Main Results:

Medication library compliance significantly improved from 93% to 97%.
Programming efficiency increased, with keystrokes decreasing from 13 to 3 (P<.0001).
Despite safety gains, perceived ease of use dropped from 90% to 45% (P<.0001), impacting staff confidence.
