To describe the evolution of pre-licensure nursing informatics competencies.
To identify key drivers of digital transformation in healthcare.
To propose future directions for nursing informatics competency frameworks in the digital health era.

A narrative, non-systematic literature review was conducted.
Multiple literature searches were performed to support the review.
Analysis focused on the evolution of competencies and digital health trends.

Main Results:

Current pre-licensure nursing informatics competency frameworks are insufficient for the digital health era.
A need for a "fifth wave" of competency development is identified.
Nurses must be prepared as informed users, contributors, evaluators, and stewards of digital health tools.
