Successful Management of Avabahuka (Frozen Shoulder) Using Ayurvedic Interventions: A Case Report

Avabahuka, commonly known as frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually and progresses through three stages: the freezing stage (painful stage), the frozen stage (adhesive stage), and the thawing stage (recovery stage). This condition affects approximately 2%-5% of the general population, with a higher prevalence among individuals aged 40-60 years. Frozen shoulder can significantly impact a person's quality of life by limiting daily activities and causing persistent discomfort. Conventional treatments include physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, and, in severe cases, surgery, whereas Ayurvedic approaches offer alternative management strategies that may provide relief and improve shoulder function. In this article, we discuss a 62-year-old male patient who presented with complaints of pain and restricted movement in his left shoulder for two months. He was managed by Tab Pirant, Rasnasaptak Kwath, and Nisha Amalaki Vati for 1 month, along with Snehan using Bala Ashwagandha oil. This was followed by Nadi Swedana with Nirgundi Patra for 7 days. Patients experienced relief from pain, stiffness, and improved range of motion within 1 month of treatment.
