Effectiveness of Different Agents in Ceasing Early Childhood Caries: A Clinical Study

Background:
Early childhood caries (ECC) remains a prevalent global health issue, particularly in developing nations. Effective interventions are critical to halting its progression and preventing long-term dental complications. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different caries-arresting agents in ceasing ECC.
Methods:
A randomized clinical trial was conducted on 150 children aged 2-5 years with ECC. Participants were divided into three groups and treated with silver diamine fluoride (SDF), fluoride varnish (FV), or glass ionomer cement (GIC). Caries progression was evaluated at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months using standardized indices.
Results:
SDF showed the highest efficacy in arresting caries lesions, with 85% of lesions arrested by 6 months. FV and GIC exhibited 70% and 60% effectiveness, respectively. Both SDF and FV demonstrated significant reductions in caries progression compared with GIC (P < 0.05).
Conclusion:
SDF is the most effective agent in ceasing ECC progression, followed by FV and GIC. Routine use of SDF could significantly impact pediatric dental health.
