The Impact of Denture Use on Cognitive Function in the Elderly: A Clinical Study

Objective:
This study evaluates the impact of denture use on cognitive function in elderly individuals with significant tooth loss.
Materials And Methods:
A total of 130 participants (aged 60-70 years) were divided into two groups: the Denture group (n = 65) and the Control group (n = 65). The Denture group received complete or partial dentures, while the Control group had natural dentition. Cognitive function was assessed at baseline, one month, and three months using the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Verbal Fluency Test (VFT). Data analysis involved independent t-tests and repeated measures ANOVA.
Results:
At baseline, there were no significant differences between groups. However, at one and three months, the Denture group exhibited significant improvements in HVLT, MMSE, and VFT scores (P < 0.05) compared to the Control group. Intragroup analysis confirmed progressive cognitive enhancement in denture users.
Conclusion:
Denture use positively influences cognitive function, likely due to restored mastication, improved nutrition, and enhanced social interaction. These findings underscore the need for oral health interventions in elderly populations to mitigate cognitive decline.
