Creating a Standardized Tool for Assessing Oral Health Awareness: A Psychometric Approach

Background:
Oral health awareness is crucial for promoting preventive dental practices and ensuring overall health. However, the absence of a standardized, validated tool for assessing oral health awareness presents a significant challenge.
Objective:
This study aims to develop and validate a psychometric tool to measure oral health awareness among diverse populations.
Methods:
A multiphase approach was adopted, involving item generation, validation, and reliability testing. The study included 300 participants selected through stratified random sampling. Data analysis included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency.
Results:
EFA identified four domains: knowledge, attitudes, practices, and barriers, with 20 items retained based on factor loadings ≥0.5. The final tool demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.91). The test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.88) confirmed stability over time.
Conclusion:
The developed tool is reliable and valid for assessing oral health awareness and can be adapted for varied demographic settings.
