Role of Forensic Radiology for Gender Determination Using CBCT: A Novel Study

Background:
In forensic medicine, gender determination is a crucial component of human identification.
Aim:
Gender differentiation by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) assessment of mandibular sigmoid notch, coronoid process, and condylar process in the population of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad districts of Gujarat.
Materials And Methods:
CBCT SCANS OF 100 subjects were analyzed. Shape of condyle and sigmoid notch were analyzed for both male and female subjects on both sides.
Results:
Commonest shape found was round in both male and female subjects. Majority of patients were having round sigmoid notch followed by wide and sloping in all male patients and female patients on right side.
Conclusion:
Using CBCT scans as a potential means of identifying individuals, the current study found a range of morphometric changes in the condyle and sigmoid notch.
