Background:
This study is the first to comprehensively evaluate the disease burden of hip fractures in Asian women, presenting epidemiological trends from 1990 to 2023.
Methods:
Data on hip fractures among women in Asian countries and regions were sourced from the 2023 Global Burden of Disease(GBD) Study, covering incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) from 1990 to 2023. Secondary analysis of these data yielded the overall disease burden of hip fractures and attributable risk factors among Asian women. Building on this information, we further reported the epidemiological trends of hip fractures among women across Asian countries and regions. We used an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to project the disease burden of hip fractures among Asian women over the next 15 years.
Results:
In 2023, the total incidence of hip fracture among Asian women was 6,307,956 (4,029,635-9,519,173), with an ASIR of 278.43 (178-419.48). Based on Joinpoint regression, the AAPC of the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of hip fractures in Asian women from 1990 to 2023 was 1.79 (95% CI: 1.74-1.84), P < 0.05. Falls are the leading cause of hip fractures among Asian women. Based on the ARIMA model, by 2040 the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of hip fracture in Asian women is projected to be 346.62 (95% CI: 299.40-393.84) per 100,000, with 10,699,484 (6,416,769-14,982,198) new cases.
Conclusion:
In Asia, hip fracture in women constitutes a substantial and growing disease burden; promoting fall-prevention initiatives across the continent is essential to curb further increases.
