Purpose:
To assess the effect of an 8-week internet-based self-management educational program on self-management abilities, quality of life, and anxiety symptom reduction in patients with anxiety disorders.
Method:
A nonrandomized controlled pilot trial was conducted with patients from an outpatient mental health center. Participants were allocated to an intervention group that received an 8-week WeChat-based self-management program (n = 43) or a control group (n = 52). Data were collected at baseline and postintervention, and included measures of self-management, anxiety, and quality of life. Analysis of covariance was used to compare outcomes between groups.
Results:
The intervention group showed significant improvements in self-management (F = 7.53, p = .007) and quality of life (F = 6.02, p = .016), and significant reduction in anxiety symptoms (F = 5.44, p = .022), compared to the control group.
Conclusion:
Findings indicate that the internet-based self-management program significantly improved self-management abilities, quality of life, and importantly, reduced anxiety symptoms in patients with anxiety disorders. These findings support the value of digital interventions in augmenting traditional anxiety treatments and indicate a potential for further investigation in larger, randomized trials.
