Purpose:
This integrative review synthesizes research on sports psychological interventions in basketball, critically evaluates the methodological rigor of the existing evidence base, and proposes an integrated framework linking individual competitive state and team spirit.
Methods:
A systematic literature search was conducted across Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycINFO using a Boolean strategy combining terms related to basketball, psychological interventions, and performance outcomes. The search yielded 991 records; following duplicate removal and eligibility screening, 151 studies were included. An integrative review methodology was employed, supported by bibliometric co-occurrence analysis using VOSviewer to empirically map research themes and structural gaps.
Results:
The evidence base is concentrated almost exclusively on adult male professional athletes, with female and youth populations severely underrepresented. Established interventions demonstrate efficacy on self-report measures but lack validation against objective behavioral and performance metrics. The field is characterized by a near-total absence of longitudinal research, leaving questions regarding skill decay, optimal dosage, and developmental sequencing unanswered. In response, a Virtuous Cycle framework was proposed wherein individual competitive state and team spirit are mutually reinforcing, and a multi-method assessment framework mandating triangulation of longitudinal psychometrics, objective behavioral analysis, and sport-specific performance metrics (clutch statistics, lineup efficiency ratings, hustle stats). Psychological Periodisation is advanced as the organizing framework for the required longitudinal research agenda.
Conclusion:
The central contribution of this review is the multi-method assessment framework, which constitutes the minimum methodological architecture for generating rigorous evidence in basketball psychology. The future of the field lies in personalized, technology-enhanced, culturally intelligent, and developmentally informed programs. The roadmap is established; the question is whether the field will commit to the sustained longitudinal investigation required to follow it.
