In this issue of Structure, Deák et al.1 present the Trypanosoma brucei H3.V-H4.V nucleosome structure and uncover a striking paradox: extreme DNA splaying uncoupled from octamer instability. Their work reveals how a lethal parasite physically rewires nucleosome mechanics to achieve robust chromatin repression without canonical heterochromatin machinery.
