[Long-term animal experimental studies of a new dentin and pulp protective varnish (Bayer D-520)]
Abstract:
A new polyurethan varnish (Bayer D-520) was tested on 4 monkeys with a total of 96 cavities after the norms of "Recommended standard practices for biological evaluation of dental materials" of the ADA 1975. After the successful short-term experiment of two weeks, a long-term examination of dentin and pulp protective properties followed. 6 combinations were used: - 16 silicate cement fillings with varnish, 16 with Dycal base (negative control), 16 without protection (positive control) - 16 composite fillings with varnish, 16 with Dycal and 16 without protection After an observation time of 3 months, with marks of 0-3 for each criterion of the histological sample a significant difference (p less than or equal to 0.01) in favour of the varnish- and Dycal-protected cavities resulted. A difference between the varnish and the Dycal base could not be statistically established.
