Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System V: CT01:28

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System V: CT

Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that utilizes CT technology, with or without intravenous (IV) contrast, to produce accurate cross-sectional virtual slices of specific areas of the heart, coronary circulation, and major blood vessels such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The computer processes these slices to generate three-dimensional images. Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a rapid form of CT scanning that captures multiple slices...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System VI: Calcium -Scoring CT

Calcium-Scoring CT ScanA calcium-scoring CT scan, also known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. This test assesses the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to cardiovascular events such as angina, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest.A calcium-scoring CT scan is generally recommended for individuals at intermediate risk of CAD without symptoms. It includes:Men aged 40-75 and women aged 50-75: Especially those with a...

Imaging Studies VII: Vascular Imaging

DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

Area of Science:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Environmental Science
  • Food Safety

Background:

  • Polymeric PFAS grease-proofers containing 6:2-fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2-FTOH) are being removed from the US food contact market.
  • Validated analytical methods are crucial for monitoring the removal of these specific PFAS from fiber-based food packaging.
  • Existing small-molecule extraction methods lack the specificity and speed required for screening intentional polymer use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate a hydrolysis isotope dilution Direct Analysis in Real Time Mass Spectrometry (ID-DART-MS) method for detecting 6:2-FTOH in fiber-based food packaging.
  • To meet FDA compound identification and validation guidelines for regulatory implementation.
  • To provide a rapid and specific screening tool for assessing the incidence and removal of PFAS-based grease-proofers.

Main Methods:

  • Refinement and validation of a hydrolysis isotope dilution DART-MS (ID-DART-MS) method.
  • Testing across various fiber-based food packaging types.
  • Method validation included assessing false positive/negative rates and linearity across a range of 6:2-FTOH concentrations.

Main Results:

  • The ID-DART-MS method successfully identified hydrolyzable 6:2-FTOH in all tested fiber-based food packaging.
  • False positive or negative rates were below 5% with 95% confidence.
  • The method demonstrated a linear response from 4 μg/kg to 130 mg/kg and identified six different fluorotelomer-containing grease-proofers within 14 minutes per sample.

Conclusions:

  • The validated ID-DART-MS method is suitable for regulatory implementation to monitor PFAS removal from food packaging.
  • This rapid analytical technique can reliably assess the presence and removal of 6:2-FTOH-containing grease-proofers.
  • The method supports efforts to ensure the removal of specific PFAS from the food contact material market.
