Background:
Pregnancy is a critical period characterized by significant physiological and psychological changes, including mood symptoms and sleep disturbances. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of mood instability and insomnia during pregnancy, their associations, and their impact on neonatal outcomes.
Methods:
This study was conducted with 751 pregnant women with varying gestational ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. Self-report measures were used to assess mood instability and insomnia during pregnancy. Neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental delays, were collected from medical records and follow-up assessments within the first year postpartum.
Results:
The prevalence of mood instability and insomnia during pregnancy was 45% and 30%, respectively. A significant association was found between mood instability and insomnia (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis indicated that both mood instability and insomnia were significantly associated with adverse neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental delays (p < 0.05).
Conclusion:
This study highlights the importance of addressing mood instability and insomnia during pregnancy to improve neonatal outcomes. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive screening and interventions to support pregnant individuals' mental and physical health. The results contribute to the existing knowledge base and can inform future research and public health initiatives in this area.
