[Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing - Patient Information]

Abstract:
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is an integrative examination of the pulmonary-cardiovascular-muscular system and represents the global gold standard in exercise testing. Due to the relatively complex nature of the test (maximum effort required, wearing a face mask and instructing the patient), it is generally recommended that the patient is given detailed and understandable information in advance. Using written patient information actively during the initial consultation can significantly improve patient-doctor communication. This also improves patient acceptance of the test, thereby enabling the best possible conditions for exercise testing. This interdisciplinary patient information aims to provide patients with clear, easy-to-understand information about CPET to help them prepare adequately for the test.

Exercise Stress Test
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.
Purposes
Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary Function Tests are crucial diagnostic tools for assessing respiratory function, particularly in patients with chronic respiratory disorders. They comprehensively evaluate lung volumes, ventilatory function, breathing mechanics, diffusion, and gas exchange. These tests help diagnose pulmonary diseases and play a significant role in monitoring disease progression, evaluating disability, and assessing response to therapy.

Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...
