Abstract:
A novel photocatalytic strategy is described for carbonylative difunctionalization of unactivated γ-C(sp3)-H bonds with alkenes. Building on a reductively initiated radical pathway from N-O reagents in combination with a 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process, this approach enables the synthesis of aryl ketones under metal-free conditions, mitigating competitive β-hydride elimination pathways.

One of the convenient methods for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones is via hydration of alkynes. Hydroboration-oxidation of alkynes is an indirect hydration reaction in which an alkyne is treated with borane followed by oxidation with alkaline peroxide to form an enol that rapidly converts into an aldehyde or a ketone.
