    Summary

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography is a feasible technique for infants with obstructive jaundice. The procedure was successful in half of the infants studied with normal-size bile ducts.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Gastroenterology
    • Interventional Radiology

    Background:

    • Obstructive jaundice in infants presents diagnostic challenges.
    • Bile duct imaging is crucial for diagnosis and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the feasibility and utility of percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) in infants.
    • To assess PTC in infants with obstructive jaundice and normal-sized bile ducts.

    Main Methods:

    • Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography was attempted in eight infants.
    • Infants had normal-sized bile ducts, a common finding in certain pediatric conditions.

    Main Results:

    • The procedure was technically successful in four out of the eight infants (50% success rate).
    • The technique was demonstrated to be feasible in the pediatric age group.

    Conclusions:

    • Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography is a viable option for investigating obstructive jaundice in infants.
    • This interventional radiology technique can be beneficial when standard cholangiography methods are insufficient.
