Ontogeny of the esophagus in quail embryos: Morphological, histochemical and ultrastructural changes

Abstract:
This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the histogenesis of the cervical and thoracic esophagus in quail embryos from day 4 to day 17 of incubation, using macroscopic anatomy, morphometric measurements, light microscopy, and electron microscopy. The esophagus was detected in 4-day-old quail embryos, showing distinct cervical and thoracic parts. Mucosal folds appeared earlier in the thoracic esophagus (day 6) than in the cervical region. The epithelium transformed from pseudostratified to stratified squamous and began producing neutral and acidic mucopolysaccharides by day 10. The muscularis mucosa developed from mesenchymal condensations into a thin myoblast cell layer by day 10, and differentiated into longitudinal smooth muscle fibers by day 12. Esophageal gland primordia appeared as solid epithelial buds on day 12. Telocytes were observed by light microscopy from day 4 onward within the mesenchymal and subsequent tissue layers. In conclusion, this study provides a detailed overview of the spatial and temporal sequence of cellular and structural events during esophageal development in the quail. These findings enhance understanding of avian embryogenesis, with potential applications in developmental biology and comparative anatomy research.
