Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate pseudomyopia characteristics in young cynomolgus macaques.
  • To explore factors associated with cycloplegic changes in primate eyes.
  • To investigate the role of the lens in animal models of myopia.

Main Methods:

  • Refractive and biometric measurements were taken before and after cycloplegia in 88 cynomolgus macaques (3-6 years old).
  • Pseudomyopia was defined by specific non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic spherical equivalent values.
  • Linear mixed models identified factors linked to cycloplegic differences.

Main Results:

  • 149 eyes were analyzed; pseudomyopia was found in 35 eyes.
  • Pseudomyopic eyes showed a greater hyperopic shift (1.42 D) compared to non-myopic and true-myopic eyes (0.50 D).
  • Pseudomyopia was associated with active accommodation and lens thickness reduction post-cycloplegia.

Conclusions:

  • Cyclopentolate induced refractive and biometric changes in young macaques.
  • Pseudomyopia in primates presents distinct accommodative characteristics compared to non-myopia and true myopia.
  • The lens plays a significant role in primate pseudomyopia, relevant for myopia research models.
