Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Intervention Research

Background:

  • Young people's gambling engagement is linked to gambling-related harm.
  • There's a need for evidence-based, school-based interventions to prevent and reduce adolescent gambling harms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To pilot a cluster randomised controlled trial of the Preventing Gambling Related Harm in Adolescents intervention.
  • To determine the utility of a phase III trial assessing effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • A two-arm pilot cluster randomised controlled trial involving six Scottish state schools.
  • Included an embedded process evaluation, health economic scoping, and social network analysis.
  • Intervention involved peer supporters trained to discuss gambling and related harms with peers.

Main Results:

  • All five progression criteria were met, including recruitment, retention, intervention fidelity, acceptability, and completion rates.
  • The process evaluation indicated the intervention was acceptable to students and staff and delivered with fidelity.
  • Indicative costs were £8313.00 per school for two intervention cycles, averaging £28.08 per student.

Conclusions:

  • The Preventing Gambling Related Harm in Adolescents intervention is feasible and acceptable for adolescents.
  • The study supports progression to a full-scale Phase III randomised controlled trial with minor amendments.
