Clinical Success and Survival Rates of Cone Morse Platform Implants Featuring a 16° Internal Taper: A Prospective
Purpose:
This study aimed to evaluate the clinical success, survival rates, and preservation of peri-implant marginal bone associated with Cone Morse implants featuring a 16° internal conical connection, with a follow-up period of up to 53 months.
Materials And Methods:
This prospective cohort study included 53 patients who received a total of 163 implants and were evaluated 6 months after prosthetic loading. A subgroup of 28 patients, comprising 80 implants, was further assessed after 53 months of prosthetic loading. Clinical parameters evaluated included the visible plaque index (VPI; dichotomous), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), presence of peri-implant mucositis, and presence of peri-implantitis. Peri-implant bone levels were assessed by standardized periapical radiographic analysis. In addition, predefined success and survival rate criteria were applied to both implants and prosthetic restorations.
Results:
At the 53-month follow-up, 80 implants in 28 patients were evaluated, yielding an implant survival rate of 100%. Mean marginal bone level change was 0.67 ± 0.56 mm, with most remodeling occurring during the early post-loading period (ΔMBL baseline-T1: -0.47 mm), followed by long-term stability (ΔMBL T1-T2: +0.02 mm). PD remained within clinically acceptable limits, with 10.52% of implants exhibiting PD > 5 mm at T2. Peri-implant mucositis was observed in 22.36% of implants, whereas peri-implantitis was diagnosed in five implants (6.57%). Marginal bone changes were not associated with implant diameter or immediate loading protocol, and immediately loaded implants demonstrated comparable peri-implant tissue stability. Prosthetic complications were infrequent resulting in an overall complication rate of 4.76%.
Conclusions:
This study demonstrated that Cone Morse connection implants with a 16° internal taper led to high success and survival rates and showed favorable clinical performance, particularly with respect to the long-term maintenance of peri-implant marginal bone levels.
