Introduction:
Despite the increasing proportion of female medical students and physicians, gender-specific disparities persist in gastroenterology and endoscopy, particularly with regard to leadership positions. The aim of this study was to analyze gender-related differences and perceived structural barriers in Germany.
Materials And Methods:
In February 2025, all members of the German Society for Gastroenterology (DGVS) were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey comprising 16 standardized questions. Data were collected on professional practice acitivity, training status, endoscopic practice, and continuing medical education, with a focus on gender-specific differences.
Results:
A total of 685 DGVS members participated. Men were significantly more likely to hold leadership positions (15.33% vs. 5.58%, p=0.0002). Women more frequently worked part-time (43.12% vs. 15.33%, p<0.0001) and performed complex interventional endoscopic procedures less often (p<0.0001). In addition, women reported significantly higher dissatisfaction with their endoscopic training (42.38% vs. 20.92%, p<0.0001), primarily due to family responsibilities and challenges balancing work and family life.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrates persistent gender disparities in gastroenterology. Targeted structural interventions and improved models for reconciling professional and family responsibilities are needed to ensure gender equity and support women's career progression.
