[Expert consensus on rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in children (2025 edition)]
Insights
Children are at high risk for rabies exposure and require specialized post-exposure prophylaxis. This consensus aims to standardize and improve rabies prevention and control for children in China.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Infectious Disease Control
- Pediatrics
Background:
- Children face heightened rabies exposure risks due to developmental factors and vulnerability to severe bites.
- Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in pediatric populations presents unique challenges in wound care, vaccination, and immunizing agent use.
Purpose of the Study:
- To address inconsistent awareness and suboptimal practices in pediatric rabies prevention in China.
- To develop a consensus guideline for standardized and improved rabies exposure prevention management in Chinese children.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive review and evaluation of current domestic and international research evidence.
- Analysis of relevant rabies prevention standards and guidelines.
- Integration of clinical practice characteristics specific to Chinese pediatric populations.
Main Results:
- Identified specific vulnerabilities and risks associated with pediatric rabies exposure.
- Highlighted distinct considerations for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in children.
- Established a framework for improving nationwide rabies prevention and control for children.
Conclusions:
- Standardized management protocols are crucial for effective rabies prevention in children.
- This consensus provides evidence-based recommendations to enhance the quality of care for children exposed to rabies.
- Implementation of this consensus is expected to improve rabies control outcomes in pediatric populations across China.
Abstract:
Children constitute a high-risk population for rabies exposure due to their physiological and psychological characteristics and limited self-protection abilities, making them particularly vulnerable to severe bites on the head, face, or multiple body parts, which significantly increases the risk of disease onset. Furthermore, rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in children exhibits distinct features in wound management, rabies vaccination, and the use of passive immunizing agents. To address the current challenges of inconsistent awareness and suboptimal practices in rabies exposure prevention for children in China, the Rabies Prevention and Control Committee of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, the Branch of Animal Injury Treatment, China Association for Disaster and Emergency Rescue Medicine, the Branch of Animal Injury and Prevention & Treatment of Acute Infectious Diseases, Beijing Association of Holistic Integrative Medicine have developed this consensus. Based on a comprehensive review and evaluation of the latest domestic and international research evidence, as well as relevant standards and guidelines, this consensus integrates clinical practice characteristics specific to rabies exposure prevention in Chinese children, aiming to systematically improve the standardization and quality of rabies exposure prevention management nationwide.
