Abstract:
We read with rigor the study by Prado et al. (2026), which investigated the effectiveness of aeration technique as a stabilization strategy for an old landfill containing low-organic waste. In their study, Prado et al. (2026) conducted a field-scale study in which atmospheric air was injected into the landfill, and the effectiveness of aeration was evaluated by monitoring temporal variations in landfill gas concentrations, primarily methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), pre-& post- aeration. The study addresses an important and timely issue, considering the persistent challenge of low degradation rates of wastes in municipal solid waste landfills. However, several aspects of the study require further clarification to strengthen its scientific rigor and practical relevance. These include: (i) the justification for stabilizing landfills containing low organic waste (organic content ∼ 8%); (ii) insufficient information regarding the characteristics of the waste material present in the landfill; (iii) inconsistencies in the reported gas concentrations and the airflow rates measured, and iv) the omission of leachate characteristics pre-& post- aeration process. Addressing these issues would have enhanced the robustness of the findings presented by Prado et al. (2026) and facilitated field-scale implementation of the aeration technique by landfill operators.
