Surveys

17.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Area of Science:

  • Psychological research methods
  • Survey methodology
  • Social sciences

Background:

  • Web-based surveys are prevalent in psychology but susceptible to inattentive respondents.
  • Existing detection methods often rely on Likert scales, limiting their applicability.
  • There's a need for methods that work with various question formats and maintain natural content.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel method for detecting inattentive respondents in online surveys.
  • To create a detection technique that does not depend on Likert-scale items.
  • To improve the validity of psychological measures by addressing response quality.

Main Methods:

  • Examined inattentive respondent detection across multiple-choice, free-response, and ranking formats.
  • Focused on multiple-choice items after initial ineffectiveness in other formats.
  • Refined detection items into behavior/fact-based questions in Study II.

Main Results:

  • Detection methods were ineffective for free-response and ranking formats.
  • A "choose X from N" multiple-choice format showed promise but over-identified inattentive respondents.
  • The refined behavior/fact-based multiple-choice method achieved strong detection without over-identification.

Conclusions:

  • A validated detection method for multiple-choice surveys, independent of Likert scales, has been developed.
  • This method enhances the validity of psychological measures, demonstrated with the Big Five scale.
  • Further research is recommended to explore its use in diverse psychological survey contexts.
