Learning Through Gamification: Enhancing Interprofessional Training for Postpartum Hemorrhage in the Perioperative
None:
Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, requiring rapid, team-based intervention, especially in high-stakes perioperative settings. Traditional drills often fail to fully engage learners or replicate the urgency of real emergencies. Gamification strategies, such as escape rooms, offer an engaging and effective way to teach necessary competencies and resuscitation skills. Originally designed for entertainment, escape rooms have emerged as effective educational tools that enhance teamwork, communication, and critical thinking while reinforcing evidence-based protocols. This article describes the design and implementation of an escape room drill focused on postpartum hemorrhage management in the postanesthesia care unit. Grounded in adult learning principles, the activity provided a safe, immersive environment for practicing hemorrhage recognition, blood loss quantification, medication administration, and collaborative decision-making under time pressure. Findings suggest that gamified drills can improve engagement, knowledge retention, and readiness, transforming emergency preparedness and ultimately supporting better maternal outcomes.
