These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...
Electroconvulsive Therapy01:30

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, remains a critical biomedical intervention for severe, treatment-resistant depression. While its origins can be traced back to Hippocrates' observations that malaria-induced convulsions alleviated mental illness, modern ECT has evolved significantly from its earlier, more primitive applications. First introduced in 1938 by Ugo Cerletti and his colleagues, ECT involves inducing controlled seizures using electrical currents. In its early years,...

Psychosurgery

Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Summary

Tele-neuropsychology (teleNP) is a viable option for veterans, showing similar usefulness to in-person evaluations. Rural veterans benefit from increased teleNP referrals, indicating its growing acceptance and utility in VA settings.

Area of Science:

  • Neuropsychology
  • Telehealth
  • Quality Improvement

Background:

  • Tele-neuropsychology (teleNP) use is rising in Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 20.
  • A quality improvement survey assessed staff opinions on teleNP services.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate VISN 20 staff opinions on teleNP.
  • Identify areas for teleNP service improvement.
  • Compare teleNP preference against face-to-face (F2F) evaluations.

Main Methods:

  • Surveyed US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) VISN 20 staff (February-June 2024).
  • 18 of 33 respondents had referred patients for neuropsychology services in the past year.

Main Results:

  • TeleNP usefulness rated 1.5 (0.8); F2F usefulness rated 1.7 (0.9). No significant difference found (P = .41).
  • Staff serving rural veterans were more likely to refer for teleNP (P = .02).
  • TeleNP usefulness ratings did not differ between rural and nonrural providers (P = .49).

Conclusions:

  • Despite a low response rate, teleNP shows acceptable utility among surveyed VA staff.
  • TeleNP is favorably comparable to existing F2F neuropsychology resources.
