Abstract:
We report that the combination of Cu2+ and ethanedithiol can mediate oxidation in various metabolites in water and concomitantly break down higher-order carbon molecules similar to extant metabolism. This observation suggests how an early metabolic system might have functioned in expanding chemical networks prior to the emergence of enzymes.
