Language and Cognition

952
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Summary

Universal screening for developmental language disorder (DLD) using a single language can overidentify multilingual students. Alternative data analysis methods are recommended to accurately identify DLD risk in diverse student populations.

Area of Science:

  • Speech and Language Pathology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Developmental Pediatrics

Background:

  • Universal screening for developmental language disorder (DLD) aims to prevent negative educational outcomes.
  • Multilingual students often face challenges with standard language testing due to language barriers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a single-language DLD screener on a multilingual student population.
  • To explore alternative methods for using single-language screening data to identify DLD risk in multilingual students.

Main Methods:

  • An English-only DLD screener was administered to 703 kindergartners with English language learner (ELL) status.
  • Analyzed screener outcomes, DLD risk status, and English proficiency.
  • Explored alternative data analysis: local norms, adjusted cut-points, score changes, and hybrid approaches.

Main Results:

  • The English-only screener overidentified multilingual students as at risk for DLD.
  • A negative correlation was found between DLD risk identification and English proficiency.
  • Alternative data analysis methods reduced the overidentification rate of ELLs at risk for DLD.

Conclusions:

  • Single-language DLD screening overidentifies multilingual students.
  • Monolingual screening approaches are cautioned against for multilingual students.
  • Alternative methods for analyzing English-only screening data are encouraged for better identification of DLD risk.
