Be an Expert in Your Field. Optimize Outcomes. Don't Stray Too Far From Your Area of Expertise

Orthopaedic sports surgeons continue to strive for improved patient outcomes. An increasing number of studies indicate that surgical outcomes are improved and complications minimized when procedures are performed by surgeons with a higher volume of the indicated procedure. By developing a specific area of expertise, surgeons can gain recognition as an expert within their region, build patient volume within that area, and optimize patient outcomes. On the other hand, when surgeons feel a pressure to maintain a high patient volume and stray outside of their comfort zone or area of expertise, complication rates increase and outcomes decline. If we as a community can make an effort to operate within our area of expertise, stay humble, and refer patients to other surgeons when the pathology does not fit our toolbox, everyone will benefit.
