    Summary

Midtrimester diagnostic amniocentesis carries a small risk of fetal loss, including spontaneous abortion and stillbirth. Infection may contribute to fetal loss in some cases, warranting careful patient counseling.

    Area of Science:

    • Perinatology
    • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
    • Obstetrics

    Background:

    • Midtrimester diagnostic amniocentesis is a common procedure for prenatal genetic testing.
    • The procedure is generally considered safe and accurate for fetal assessment.

    Observation:

    • A study of 371 patients undergoing midtrimester amniocentesis reported 9 cases of fetal loss.
    • This included 8 spontaneous abortions (2.2%) and 1 stillbirth (0.17%).

    Findings:

    • Infection was identified as a potential significant factor in 3 of the 9 fetal loss cases.
    • The overall fetal loss rate in this cohort was 2.4%.

    Implications:

    • Despite its safety profile, midtrimester amniocentesis carries inherent risks that necessitate thorough patient counseling.
