Exploring the Level and Associated Factors of Death Anxiety Among Emergency Nurses in China: A Multicenter
Introduction:
Emergency nurses often face death and may experience death anxiety. However, the level of death anxiety among emergency nurses in China and its associated factors remain poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the level of death anxiety among emergency nurses in China and identify its associated factors.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study included emergency nurses from 12 hospitals in 5 provinces of China. A total of 705 emergency nurses were recruited between September and December 2023. The data were collected through questionnaires, including the Chinese version of Templer's death anxiety scale, the social support rating scale, and the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson resilience scale. Descriptive statistics, independent-samples t tests, 1-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data.
Results:
The mean death anxiety score among emergency nurses was 45.18 ± 8.52. Social support (r = -0.15; P<.001) and psychological resilience (r = -0.30; P<.001) were negatively correlated with death anxiety. Religious beliefs, having family members or friends with serious health issues, social support, and psychological resilience were identified as associated factors and together accounted for 11% of the variance in death anxiety scores in the regression model.
Discussion:
The level of death anxiety among the emergency nurses in this sample was relatively elevated. To alleviate death-related anxiety among emergency nurses, targeted intervention plans should be considered and implemented.
