Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Odontogenic myxomas are rare benign tumors originating from odontogenic ectomesenchyme.
  • Maxillary odontogenic myxomas present unique challenges due to their location and potential for aggressive growth.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical presentation, surgical management, and reconstruction of maxillary odontogenic myxomas.
  • To propose a comprehensive management algorithm for diagnosis and treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Two case reports of maxillary odontogenic myxomas treated with resection and temporalis muscle flap reconstruction.
  • Diagnosis confirmed via clinical, radiological, and histopathological examinations.

Main Results:

  • Case 1: 36-year-old female with a multilobulated lesion; 27-month follow-up showed no recurrence.
  • Case 2: 27-year-old male with a large, aggressive lesion; 32-month follow-up showed successful healing without relapse.

Conclusions:

  • Maxillary odontogenic myxomas necessitate individualized, multidisciplinary management.
  • A proposed algorithm aids in decision-making for surgical approaches and reconstruction, improving outcomes.
