Extensive research has established a complex relationship between the host, diet, and gut microbiota. Recent studies highlight the critical role of the host circadian clock in maintaining health. Notably, diet and gut microbiota composition have been shown to modulate circadian clock gene expression. Here, we summarize the influences of diet, gut microbiota, and the circadian clock on host health, as well as how diet and gut microbiota regulate the circadian clock. In particular, we focus on the mechanisms by which diet and gut microbiota regulate the circadian clock. Given the widespread impact of diet, gut microbiota, and the circadian clock on host health, understanding their complex relationship is a critical aspect of maintaining host homeostasis and health.
