Rab Cascades01:25

Rab Cascades

3.8K
Rab GTPases act in a regulated cascade during membrane fusion, helping the lipid bilayers mix. The Rab family of proteins are active when bound to GTP, and inactive when bound to GDP. Hence, they act as guanine nucleotide-dependent molecular switches. Rab-GTP recognizes and binds to long or short-range tethering proteins to capture the target vesicle. These tethers coordinate with SNAREs on the vesicle and the target membrane to assemble the trans SNARE complex that locks the mixing bilayers.

Direct Motor Pathways01:11

Direct Motor Pathways

5.2K
The direct motor pathways, also known as the pyramidal tracts, are a group of neural pathways that originate in the brain and descend through the spinal cord. They control the voluntary movement of the body. There are two major direct motor pathways: the corticospinal and the corticobulbar tracts.
The corticospinal tract is responsible for the voluntary movement of the limbs and trunk. It originates in the cerebral cortex of the brain and descends through the cerebrum's internal capsule and...

Interference: Path Lengths

2.4K
Consider two sources of sound, that may or may not be in phase, emitting waves at a single frequency, and consider the frequencies to be the same.
Two special sources may be considered when they are in phase. This can be easily achieved by feeding the two sources from the same source. An example would be synchronizing the two speakers by feeding them with the same source, such as the sound waves produced by a tuning fork. This setup ensures that the two sources have the same frequency and are...

Auditory Pathway01:15

Auditory Pathway

8.9K
Auditory pathways constitute the complex neural circuits responsible for transmitting and interpreting auditory information from the peripheral auditory system to the brain. Sound waves are initially captured by the outer ear, funneled through the ear canal, and reach the tympanic membrane (eardrum). These vibrations are transmitted via the middle ear's ossicles to the inner ear's cochlea.
When viewed cross-sectionally, the cochlea reveals the scala vestibuli and scala tympani flanking...

Indirect Motor Pathways01:22

Indirect Motor Pathways

3.8K
The indirect motor or extrapyramidal pathways originate in the brainstem, the lower portion of the brain that connects it to the spinal cord. They consist of several distinct tracts, each with specialized functions. The four main tracts of the indirect motor pathways are the vestibulospinal tract, the reticulospinal tract, the tectospinal tract, and the rubrospinal tract.
The vestibulospinal tract originates in the vestibular nuclei of the brainstem. The vestibular system detects changes in...

Robbers Cave04:49

Robbers Cave

15.1K
During the 1950s, the landmark Robbers Cave experiment demonstrated that when groups must compete with one another, intergroup conflict, hostility, and even violence may result. At the Oklahoman summer camp, two troops of boys—termed the Rattlers and the Eagles—took part in a week-long tournament. During this time, their negativity culminated in derogatory name-calling, fistfights, and even vandalism and destruction of property. However, this work also revealed that such tension...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Māori doctors face significant barriers, including racism and lack of mentorship, in surgical training pathways. Strengthening culturally grounded support is crucial for improving Māori representation and equity in surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Workforce Diversity
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Māori are underrepresented in Aotearoa's surgical health workforce, leading to health inequities.
  • Understanding Māori doctors' experiences throughout their surgical training is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore Māori doctors' experiences in surgical training.
  • To identify barriers, enablers, and opportunities for improving Māori pathways into surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A qualitative study using a Kaupapa Māori approach.
  • Online surveys with Māori medical students, junior doctors, and registrars.
  • Semi-structured interviews with Māori surgical consultants.

Main Results:

  • Key motivators include early surgical exposure, mentorship, and commitment to Māori health.
  • Culturally grounded initiatives and Māori mentorship are strong supportive factors.
  • Barriers include racism, limited Māori mentors, and cultural tensions in Pākehā-dominated environments.

Conclusions:

  • This study offers continuum-wide insights into Māori doctors' surgical training experiences.
  • Addressing systemic barriers and enhancing culturally grounded support is essential.
  • Improving Māori representation and equity in the surgical workforce requires targeted interventions.
