Development and testing of a patient-reported discharge readiness measure for daytime knee arthroscopy

Background:
The lack of a specific assessment tool for knee arthroscopy patient leads to a lack of validity and accuracy of the assessment results, which affects the overall success of discharge preparation. This study aims to develop and psychometrically test the Patient-Reported Scale for assessing Discharge Readiness in patients undergoing daytime Knee Arthroscopy.
Methods:
This was a quantitative empirical research design. Development of the patient-reported instrument entailed three stages: item pool generation, pretesting evaluation, and psychometric testing. Item pools were generated through literature reviews, patient semi-structured interviews, and Delphi expert inquiries. A cross-sectional study evaluated the construct validity and internal consistency using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's α coefficient to test the hypotheses. Data were collected between May and December 2023 at a hospital's Orthopaedic Day Care Unit.
Results:
The study included 346 patients undergoing daytime knee arthroscopy. The content validity index exceeded 0.8. Factor analysis revealed 17 items across five dimensions. Item-total correlations were acceptable, and Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.859.
Conclusion:
The patient-reported assessment of discharge readiness in patients undergoing daytime knee arthroscopy demonstrated strong reliability and validity.
