Summary

Traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs) are common colorectal polyps, often found in the right colon and associated with increasing age. About a quarter of patients also have synchronous adenomas, underscoring the need for thorough polyp evaluation.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the epidemiological, endoscopic, and histopathological features of serrated polyps.
  • To investigate the subtypes of serrated polyps and their synchronous occurrence with conventional adenomas.

  • Cross-sectional observational study of patient records from 2013-2018.
  • Analysis of variables including age, sex, polyp subtype, size, location, and synchronous adenomas.

  • 329 serrated polyps identified: 144 traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs), 126 sessile serrated lesions, 59 hyperplastic polyps.
  • TSA occurrence increased with age (3% per year). Most TSAs (80%) were in the right colon.
  • 24% of cases had synchronous adenomas, with TSAs being the most frequent subtype.

Conclusions:

  • TSAs are predominant, favor the right colon, and are linked to advanced age.
  • The presence of synchronous adenomas in approximately 25% of cases highlights the need for careful serrated polyp detection and characterization.
